MCC Austria opens the first zero-energy-building

On 23 October 2017 METRO Cash&Carry Austria opened the new St. Pölten Store: the 1st zero-energy-building in the wholesale market.

From a distance, the facade of thermally treated spruce, which is noticeably different than before, can be seen and gives the entire wholesale store a distinctly different touch. Window surfaces, which lead around the entire store, provide more daylight and thus enable a reduction in artificial lighting. All windows can be opened by means of a central control panel, so that the building is sufficiently cooled by means of transverse ventilation. Thus - even to satisfy the zero-energy requirement - a ventilation system can be completely dispensed.

METRO in St. Pölten is fully committed to the idea of ​​sustainability and already regarded as an international showcase project in the METRO world. Compared to the existing METRO stores, in St. Pölten not only fundamental changes in design and technology have been implemented, but also in the concept of the approximately 8.500 m² of sales area (food 5.200m² | fresh/ultrafresh 2.033m² | non-food 3.800m²).

St. Pölten is the capital city of Austrian Province Lower Austria, with more than 54,000 inhabitants. St. Pölten is the economic center of western Lower Austria and the northern Alpine foothills, the administrative, commercial and industrial as well as the regional media, education and university center.

Our goal for our new store was to combine our core competence, which has been proven over decades, with a "well-being concept". Away from the pragmatic industrial building towards much wood and daylight with a modern area division: Just after entering the market, customers expect a 360-degree view and thus a clear orientation with a new bistro concept at the center. The energy supply is generated in St. Pölten via its own photovoltaic system. This means that even more energy is generated over the year than is necessary for the METRO store itself. The waste heat from the chillers is used for heating and conditioning the hot water.

Sustainable technology leads to a more attractive shopping experience

In the case of fresh-food departments, the market character is highlighted; these are linked and combined, allowing the customer to stroll directly from the fruit and vegetables to the fish and meat sections. 

Refrigeration is only used where it is necessary - large-area cooling rooms have been reduced. In this way, customers make their product choices "without freezing" at rest with fish and meat.

The highlight of the ultra-fresh product range of METRO in St. Pölten is the fresh fish department, which has been designed very innovatively. Approximately 60 to 70 fresh fish from sustainable fishing and aquaculture are offered every day. Exotics such as Red Snapper are part of the tribe.

Sustainability also in connection with traffic

The entire transport concept around the new wholesale store is also under the aspect of sustainability. In addition to parking, there are also parking facilities for bicycles and e-filling stations; In addition, a direct marketing service will be opened directly in front of the METRO store bus stop. The accessibility by car is also ideal at the new location.

Prosperity and our learning: METRO in St. Pölten is an example of the fact that an industrial building does not have to be more expensive if it is built sustainably. The operating costs of the market are much lower, resulting in a very successful business case over the life cycle - imitation is desired!
