On, 13 July 2017, a new company you may know about was listed at the Frankfurt stock exchange: METRO – an international wholesale and food specialist, active in 35 countries with more than 150.000 employees and 21 million customers.
By this listing the demerger of METRO GROUP with their sales lines in two independent companies – CECONOMY (MediaMarkt, Saturn) for consumer electronics and the wholesale and food specialist METRO (METRO Cash & Carry, Real) – was successfully completed. In the annual general meeting held in February 2017, shareholders had approved the demerger of METRO GROUP into two strategically focused companies. The aim of the demerger is to lead the experience from more than 50 years within diverse sales lines into more clarity, identity and dynamics.
The “new” METRO is an international wholesale and food specialist and the partner for independent businesses. The success of our professional customers in the hospitality and gastronomy sector, as well as retail is our main focus and the basis of our success. Thereby we want to lift the food and gastronomy service up to a new level. In this regard we take the opportunity that digitalization for our sector offers – for our customers and for us. Therefore METRO will provide solutions that will help small and middle-sized entrepreneurs achieve sustainable success. Our company is arising to a platform that connects the business segments retail (Real), wholesale (METRO Cash & Carry), delivery (for example Rungis Express) and digital solutions.
In retail trade we are present with Real at 282 locations in Germany. With 106 Cash & Carry stores in Germany and more than 750 stores worldwide METRO is a leading stock listed company. In Germany only the “new” METRO employs 58.000 employees. The sales generated in Germany were about 12.3 billion Euros in the financial year 2015/2016.
We want to push the growth of our wholesale and food specialist business in a sustainable way. In June we celebrated the topping-out ceremony of our biggest logistic center with 235.000 m2 in Marl, Germany. In terms of digitalization we already set new tones for our sector: With the business unit HoReCa Digital and the METRO Techstars Accelerator we seek for digital solutions in the trade, hospitality and gastronomy sector – to switch the operating system of gastronomy from paper and pencil to mobile devices.
With the Digital Office EU, at the Wednesday Socials in Brussels, with personal conversations and of course on Twitter @METRO_EU we want to continue the dialogue with You – especially taking the exciting transformation process in the trade sector into account.
And we would be happy to invite you: Visit us within the framework of the düsseldorf festival! from 13 September to 2nd October 2017 und get to know the new METRO in the city center of Düsseldorf. Each Country, where METRO is present, will present itself individually and uniquely.
