METRO's Commitment to the Circular Economy
Position Paper to Circular Economy / Plastics Strategy
With today's Plastics Strategy the European Commission takes another step along the road started in December 2015 with the publication of the Communication "Closing the loop - an EU Action Plan for a Circular Economy". Within this context, METRO AG wants to reiterate its commitment to the objectives set out in the action plan, that is, the "transition to a more circular economy, where the value of products, materials and resources is maintained in the economy for as long as possible, and the generation of waste minimised".
News from Brussels / Week 23 – 27 January 2017
Last week the Circular Economy Package featured high on the agendas of the EU institutions. Whereas the Committee on the Environment passed a resolution demanding new targets to reduce food waste and increase waste recycling, the European Commission published a report on the progress of the circular economy action plan. In the European Parliament the committees elected their chairs and co-chairs and discussed the policy priorities of the Maltese presidency for the coming months.
Retailers' Environmental Action Programme (REAP)
On 1 June 2016, in the context of the Retailers‘ Environmental Action Programme (REAP), 21 large European retailers and associations presented the objectives, to which the signatories have voluntarily committed themselves, to Environment Commissioner Karmenu Vella. With these commitments, the trade industry is contributing to the aim of moving towards a Circular Economy.
