B2B goes digital: EuroCommerce conference and Bon Appetit event METRO GROUP underlines impact of digital technology on wholesale

Yesterday's EuroCommerce Wholesale Day discussed how digital technology is transforming #Wholesale. EU-Commissioner Oettinger said at the conference: “The Commission is committed to boosting the #Digitalisation of the European industry through the full implementation of its Digital Single Market Strategy. This digitalisation will affect the whole supply and operations chain and will therefore have a strong impact on wholesalers who act as middlemen in commerce. Wholesalers have to take up this challenge in order to benefit fully from the efficiency gains with digitalisation can provide. Through their own e-commerce activities, wholesalers have already proven that they can succeed as well in this particular form of trade.”Wim van Herwijnen, Head of Information Services of METRO AG Wholesale & Food Specialist Company represented #METROGROUP at the conference and talked about trust as the major currency when managing supplier and customer data on #B2B online platforms.

Zoom in

In the evening we hosted staff members from retail associations and Brussels institutions at our Bon Appétit #Event. We invited Matthias Spielkamp from Algorithm Watch to challenge METRO GROUP, represented by Wim van Herwijnen, on who should be allowed to make use of #BigData and for what purpose. We had a very interesting discussion with a lot of open questions on algorithm and Artificial Intelligence, freedom and democracy, responsibility, consumer protection and rights – at least the philosophical question “who owns the data” - Thank you Wim and Matthias for a long and exiting day in Brussels!
