EuroCommerce Event on Health and Nutrition

Retail and wholesale working for a healthy lifestyle

At EuroCommerce's event “Retail and Wholesale Working for a Healthy Lifestyle” on 15 May 2018 -hosted by MEP Julie Girling- retailers and wholesalers presented their success stories for promoting healthy diets and lifestyles to their customers.

According to the European Health Interview Survey by EuroStat, almost 1 in 6 adults in the EU is considered obese with no systematic difference in obesity between men and women.

The representative  European Commission's DG SANTE Director John F. Ryan emphasized the importance of nutrition sustainability and how fight against obesity and chronic diseases are also shaping the health Agenda in the Council. Although the European Consumer Organization BEUC supports the idea of mandatory government – defined targets for reformulation, the European Commission is welcoming the voluntary initiatives by retailers and wholesalers, since mandatory reformulation considerations are not planned at the moment. Nevertheless BEUC stated the need for a comprehensive approach including reflections on food labelling, reformulation and marketing of products to children.

The Health and Wellness Pillar of Consumer Goods Forum is also working on ways to bring local stakeholders, public health authorities and academics leaders to engage consumers towards healthier baskets. With pilot projects across the globe, local communities are supported in adopting healthier diets and lifestyles.

In her closing remarks MEP Girling pointed out the strong divisions at the European Parliament over mandatory and voluntary schemes.

At the event EuroCommerce also launched its new publication on healthy lifestyles initiatives of its members. You may read the publication here.
