METRO showed high engagement at the Brussels Seafood Expo, 25 April 2017. METRO experts visited several events and emphasised the importance of seafood for the company.
Seafood is of utmost importance for METRO’s business and even beyond for our life. Selling 200,000 tons of fish a year makes METRO to one of the biggest fresh fish wholesalers in Europe. In many countries and stores the assortment covers more than 100 seafood articles a day – a huge selection of high quality products for METRO's customers. Healthy fish stocks will help to feed 10 billion people in the future. Therefore METRO has a tremendous interest to protect the resource fish.
High level policy debate by DG MARE on consumers
Veronika Pountcheva, Global Director Corporate Responsibility, participated in a high-level political debate organized by the European Commission, Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (DG MARE). Aguiar Machado, Director-General of DG MARE discussed with sector representatives and the audience on how to respond to consumer expectations. The debate’s topic was “Getting consumers on board - Integrating consumer expectations in the supply chain”.
Veronika Pountcheva put forward how METRO has been engaged in stakeholder dialogues with regard to EU policies for years and shared how METRO takes into account the customers’ demands and wishes with regard to product range, quality & sustainability and customer information.
METRO committed to change towards sustainable sourcing for 80 % of ist 12 best-selling fish species by 2020. But what does sustainable sourcing mean in the context of seafood? Who guarantees sustainable fish in the jungle of labels and certificates? This question was brought forward by Andrea Weber from the Corporate Responsibility team. As Steering Board Member of GSSI, the Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative, she was attending the GSSI Stakeholder Update. GSSI is a global platform and partnership of seafood companies, NGOs, experts, governmental and intergovernmental organizations working towards more sustainable seafood for everyone. GSSI defined a benchmark in order to give guidance to the whole fish sector and to our customers.
Traceability of Seafood
To assure healthy fish stocks we need to know where the fish is coming from. Therefore METRO developed together with other partners a traceability solution PROTRACE which helps preventing illegal fishing and gives detailed origin information. METRO is interested in global-wide solutions based on standards. Therefore METRO is supporting the GDST, the Global Dialogue on Seafood Traceability. This initiative was launched in Brussels. Britta Gallus, Supply Chain Management, attended the launch and highlighted the importance of a common traceability understanding in order to connect traceability engagement in the community.
